Inge Beckmann

Everybody wants a piece of Inge Beckmann. The Lark vocalist has roles in Death Race 2 and the BBC serial Atlantis, as well as a presenting job on e.sat’s The Style Report.

Greg Rom’s music video for their song, Moonlight, remains one of our favourite local music videos, while she’s appeared in quite a few short films, such as Brian Little’s Night Swimmer for MTV, Hein de Vos’ Orgie and Michael Matthews’ Sweetheart. She’s even been the subject matter of a film project: Levis and Fly on the Wall Films asked eight local directors to make short films about the singer on the Nokia N93.

In Atlantis, due to hit DSTV in April, Inge plays the High Priestess of Knossos. She says the role was a brilliant exercise in acting as most of the work was behind a green screen. “Working with your fourth  wall was very educational.”

In The Style Report, produced by Nicky Greenwall, Inge presents opposite Lutho Somdyala. “I have a newfound respect for presenters. It’s a completely new discipline for me. It teaches you to be more articulate,” she says. Her unforgettable voice has featured on many film projects. She has featured in Bruno Bossi’s Loerie-winning Lost commercial for MWEB, Rowan Pybus’s films featuring street artist Faith47, and notably, The Black Heart Gang’s award-winning The Tale of How, about which Inge fondly recalls “breathing personality into all these different characters. It was a lot of fun.”

Inge and The Black Heart Gang’s Markus Smit (aka Markus Wormstorm from the Real Estate Agents) go way back. She contributed vocals to his Afro-electro project Sweat-X and worked with him for his Say Thank You composing house, which is co-owned by DJ Sibot.

Despite her newfound screen fame, the Woolworths brand ambassador isn’t done with music. Lark is reuniting for their March “V” tour, armed with a new single, which Inge describes as “their best song yet.”

She’s also going strong with her solo career, wowing audiences with her haunting voice, a violinist and a musical saw player. Other music projects in the pipeline include The Tale Swapper, with Donny Truter and Jacques du Plessis.
