Vuka! Award winners

CityVarsity alumni Alan Shelley dominated the newcomer category with Moses. The PSA was created on behalf of the St Kizito Children’s Programme in Uganda as part of a college project. The commercial won overall and took home best direction, script, cinematography, sound design/original music and editing craft awards.

Alan served as director, editor, copywriter and visual effects artist on the project, using equipment from CityVarsity and Waterfront Post for post production. Vega Durban produced two winning entries in the newcomer’s category. SA Guide Dogs The Last Piece, directed by Paige Sanders, won Best Concept.

A Home For Every Heart won the award for Best Animation. Directed by Chris McNabb, Sharleen Hollick, and Brendon Celine, the commercial was created to benefit  the Thokomala Orphan Care Organisation.

In the Contenders category, Ogilvy South Africa’s PSA for Oxfam Global Warming, It’s Getting Hot in Here, was the overall winner and also won Best Concept and Best Use  of Humour.  Frieze Film’s Jonty Fine played the triple role of director, DOP and editor, while Fran Luckin was creative director. The striptease commercial has a ridiculous PG18 rating on YouTube. Warren Smart won Best Cinematography for his work on The Silent Killer for the Heart & Stroke Foundation.  The spot was directed by Grant Paul Royand through Silver Bullet Productions.

New production company Blue Panther was the big winner in the Professional category with Conflict Diamonds, which won Best Overall, Concept,  Cinematography, and Sound Design/Original Music.

The PSA was directed by Grant De Sousa on behalf of the African Diamond Council and produced by Warren Meltz. Roy Zetisky was cinematographer, Eben Smal edited it, and Simon Malherbe was the name behind the music.

Velocity’s Anton Visser won Best Direction for 21st Birthday, part of a series of three, which also won Best Script for Lowe Bull Cape Town. The Association For Responsible Alcohol Use (ARA) were the beneficiaries. Best Animation went to The Experiment, which was animated  by Adrian Bergoff, who co-directed, produced and envisioned with Garreth Bird on behalf of Cape Town Drug Counselling Centre.
