SSETA Profile: Priscilla David

BEFORE December last year, Priscilla David was the provincial manager of the Service SETA in the Western Cape. She has since moved on to become the Chamber Manager for Film, Animation and the Creative Industries as well as Events, Catering and Conference Management. It’s a role she sees as challenging, rewarding and exciting. It certainly keeps her busy. In her capacity as chamber manager for Film, Animation and the Creative Industries, her responsibilities include the following areas: Identifying and organising employer and employee bodies; ensuring that standards and qualifications are internationally benchmarked and meet industry requirements; ensuring that industry requirements are aligned with the sector skills plan to recognise professional bodies as certification partners for the awarding of professional designations; and facilitating the process of skills development within the services sector. Priscilla has been an educator for twelve years and holds both a teaching diploma and a BA degree from the University of Cape Town. For her contribution to skills development in the province and her work with underprivileged youths, Priscilla received an award from the Premier of the Western Cape.

She’s awarded 100 bursaries for a one year animation qualification in partnership with the Cape Film Commission and False Bay College, but she has loftier hopes for the project. She is liaising with the Gauteng Film Commission and the Durban Film Office to take the project to a national level. She says, “We’ve already come a long way in the film industry.” Priscilla is also in discussion with Toonboom for a school feeder program to see learners from grade 10-12 develop their animation and scriptwriting skills. She aims to consolidate existing relationships with Skillset. One result of these talks is German Master classes taking place in November. She says, “This is to help the industry grow to a level of global competency and will involve experts from Europe conducting master classes as well as skills transfer.”
