Egoli – The movie

At the end of March 2010, the country’s first and longest running daily drama will disappear from the M-Net schedule, but that doesn’t mean that it’s quite the end of Egoli yet. In September 2009, Franz Marx Films began shooting an Egoli feature film, which is due to hit the big screen in 2010. The contract for the Egoli movie, of which the title has yet to be confirmed, was signed by M-Net, Brigadiers/Franz MarxFilms, and Nu Metro, who will be distributing the film. M-Net’s head of General Entertainment, Theo Erasmus, says it makes absolute sense to extend the Egoli brand. “In its 18th year of existence, Egoli has become a strong brand with a huge fan base. Even though M-Net has decided, in terms of its bigger programme strategy for the future, to end broadcasting the soap next year, we believe that there’s a big existing – and possibly even future - audience who would love to enjoy the brand in other formats, on other platforms.”
