Upstairs Post's Kobus Loots edits an award-winner

Selinah, directed by Egg Films’ Kim Geldenhuys for the Topsy Foundation, has been shortlisted for a Clio Award.

The moving Ogilvy spot was the Creative Circle’s Ad of the Month for December 2009 and also featured in Shot, a leading international trade.

Kobus Loots from Upstairs Post Production, who has worked with Kim on commercials for over fifteen years, was attracted to the project because it was for charity and because the subject matter struck a chord with him as a fellow South African.

The PSA, shot over 90 days, depicts Selinah laying on her bed getting sicker and sicker, but the twist is the ad is playing out in reverse, so Selinah is actually getting better.

Ensuring that the viewers understand that they are witnessing Selinah’s genuine recovery was challenging for Kobus. After much debate between himself, Kim and the agency, he added titles, which reinforced the concept.

At first, Kobus was daunted by the sheer weight of work. “Selinah was filmed every day for a three-month period, so I ended up with 60 hours of footage.”

While it was tough working through so much footage, he found a way to tell Selinah’s story that worked for him. “I cut her from left to right and then right to left and then picked the best shots.” Selinah’s progess was clearly visible as the footage arrived at the Upstairs office each week.

“Seeing Selinah’s journey to health was the most humbling and inspiring experience for everyone involved,” agree Kerry Hosford and Rozanne Rocha-Gray, who co-produced the project for Egg.

Because it was a PSA, there was no time limit on the project.

In the end, it took Kobus almost six months to complete the post production on the 85-second final cut.

He used HD Avid for the edit. Waterfront Post offered much technical assistance in this regard and BlackGinger did all the online work, with both companies giving generously of their time and resources.

Many music options were explored in terms of a soundtrack, but upon hearing a track composed by Human NY specifically for the project, the choice was immediately clear.

Egg lauds everyone’s generosity. “The kindness and support shown by individuals and companies offering their time and resources was amazing.”

Kobus has just finished work on a Coca-Cola commercial for Leigh Ogilvie and is on his way to India for a well-earned holiday.
