A group of unlikely characters come together to do the stage play of their lives - under the lead of the faithful and dreamful Piet, this group consisting of elders from the old age home needs to find a way to not only put together and act out this play, but to get past the all controlling Sara, who runs the old age home with an iron fist. It is a classic story of the value of each individual person and how even the least expected person can truly contribute to a team. Rich in its humour and old age home story details, this story touches not only the elder of our society- but indeed all to understand and appreciate those we come from and the value they indeed do have. bringing life to what is seen as old bones. Award winning director and writer Desmond Denton has initiated this film. Anderkant die stilte features legendary actors South African actors Andre Rossouw, Joeye De Koker, Hannetjie Smit, Annemari Blanckenberg, Johan and Lida Botha. Heart of the film: The story of these characters doesn’t look all that different from the struggles that elders potentially face everyday. Instead of ignoring the ugliness of life or conversely glorifying it, the film reveals hope in even the darkest of situations. The film has been inspired by an in depth research and study into the book of Dr Mario Denton, “the value of team”. With this we found how important it is that each person find and play their role to the best of their ability, in the bigger picture. The sad part about this was when we found our story we came about a sad reality, the reality of the loss of the role of elders in our own societies. Doing the research at elderly homes we found countless people just sitting there, with no one visiting, these people who were once fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers and even grandfather and mothers. With this at heart we created ANDERKANT DIE STILTE, a story that inspires to connect and to emphasize the value that we all play in each other’s lives. How have “olders” lost sight of becoming elders? For thousands of years, elders were the most important part of a society. Elders were responsible for the soul of society. Their wisdom and experience guaranteed that their people did not lose sight of the highest values of their culture. Their long view kept society wise in its use of laws and authority. Elders kept society on a spiritual path. When elders were corrupted, or lost sight of basic values, society fragmented, and harmony was lost. There is a growing recognition of the need for mentors in our culture. The role is the guardian of the values that arise from the journey and the responsibility to guide others in their own journeys. The role has to do with guiding younger men on the last legs of their journey to manhood. The role has existed for thousands of years in indigenous cultures. He is old, but he never retires.
