Eleven-year old Sobahle Mkhabase star from KwaZulu-Natal recently scooped the Best Actress award at the Tarifa International Pan African Film Festival in Spain for her role in Izulu Lami (My Secret Sky).
She spoke to The Callsheet:
Was it your dream to be a film actress? I didn’t think about it until our director, Madoda, came to our school and discovered my talent.
How did you know about the auditions? I heard about the auditions when Madoda and the Vuleka people came to our school and spoke to our principal. She asked our drama teacher to come and ask for children from Grade four to seven who wanted to audition. So I was one of the children who raised their hands because I wanted to give it a shot.
What does the Best Actress Award mean to you? It has been a blessing for me and also for my family because I didn’t know that I had this great talent of acting until Madoda discovered me at the auditions.
Who is your favourite actor? I have a lot of favourite actors, who I see on TV, like Menzi Ngubane, Connie Ferguson and Sophie Ndaba from Generations.
Is there anything else that you dream of achieving? I also want to try singing, and then I will see where I end up, because I currently singing in a choir at school and I also do drama.
