The South African Academy Award Selection Committee has selected Stepping Stone’s White Wedding as the South African entry for the 82nd Academy Awards in the Foreign Language category.
Directed by Jann Turner, White Wedding grossed over R1.1 million at the box office in its first week, going on to run for eleven consecutive weeks and reached R5 million at the box office. The story is told in Afrikaans, English, Zulu and Xhosa. “We are thrilled, overwhelmed and really honoured to represent our country,” says lead actor Kenneth Nkosi, who plays a groom traveling to Cape Town for his wedding. Kenneth also co-produced and co-wrote the screenplay with Jann and fellow lead Rapulana Seiphemo, who plays the womanising best man. The National Film and Video Foundation is officially recognised by the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences as the body to represent South Africa and make the submission on behalf of the South African film industry Darrell Roodt’s Yesterday was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 2005, with Gavin Hood’s Tsotsi winning the category the following year.
