Teboho Leads Loerie Nominations |
|||
|
Bomb’s Teboho Mahlatsi is the most nominated commercials director ahead of The Loerie Awards, which will be held in Cape Town at the Good Hope Centre on 25 and 26 September 2009. Teboho has 14 nominations, spread between Sophiatown and Grease/Summer Loving, his two Vodacom spots; Lift, his Cannes –shortlisted ad for MTN; and Talking Man, his Cell C commercial. Teboho’s risen steadily since moving into commercials four years ago, having previously established himself as one of South Africa’s most respected television directors on shows like Yizo Yizo and Zone 14. At last year’s Loeries, Teboho had the most nominated ad, MTN Community Table, collecting three craft certificates and a Bronze. Teboho’s closest competition comes from Picture Tree’s Alan Irvin, who has nine nominations, largely from his two Player 23 spots for Vodacom, as well as an Advertising Mixed Media nomination. It’s been a good year for Alan, who just nabbed first and second place at the Creative Circle June ad of the month for Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, his Lexus spot, and Player 23+1. Velocity’s Greg Gray has eight nominations, spread between BMW Diver and his Windhoek Lager series starring Louis Gosset Junior, which also has an Advertising Mixed Media nomination. Egg’s Slim is in fourth place, with seven nominations, mostly for Snowman/Chilly, his hugely popular Chicken Licken spot, which is the most nominated advert alongside Sophiatown. Egg’s Humanoid director, Terence Neale, shares fifth place with Velocity’s Anton Visser. Egg, incorporating Humanoid, is the most nominated production company, with 19 nominations. After dominating last year, Velocity are second with fifteen nominations for commercials, plus another for Advertising Mixed Media. Bomb is in third with 14, which is particularly impressive for a company with only one director, followed by Picture Tree with nine, as well as an Advertising Mixed Media nomination. New animation company Disko, an offshoot of last year’s print Grand Prix winner, amicollective, share fifth place with four nominations with fellow animators, The Deli, Velocity’s sister company, Bouffant, Frieze Films, and Plank. There’s been a lot of debate over the relationship of Egg to Humanoid compared to Velocity to Bouffant. We went with the entry forms, which credit Egg and Humanoid together but Velocity and Bouffant separately. If Egg and Humanoid were treated separately, then Velocity would be first with 15, followed by Bomb with 14, Egg with 13, Picture Tree with nine and Humanoid with six. If Velocity and Bouffant were dealt with as one company, as the Commercials Producers’ Association does due to their common ownership, the group of companies would match Egg’s 19 nominations within the commercials category. Since Velocity also has an Advertising Mixed Media and a Mixed Media nomination, the Velocity and Bouffant group would be the most nominated production company across all categories, with 21 nominations. With 22 nominations, Net#work BBDO lead the agencies within the commercials category. Draftfcb are close behind with 20, followed by Ogilvy with 15, The Jupiter Drawing Room with 14 and FoxP2 with 7. South African Jan Jacobs, who owns New York agency Johannes Leonardo, was the Loeries Advertising Jury chairman. He praised the work’s local flavour, saying, “It has taken the industry a long time to become comfortable being South African. Used correctly, this will be a powerful tool for SA advertising and completely set it apart from the rest of the world. I was pleasantly surprised by the South African ‘voice’ that’s present in the work – something that wasn’t very strong when I worked here.” He was critical of the television sector though, which he said had slackened from the great ads by BMW, Nando’s and Mercedes ten years ago. “TV needs a bit of work and it’s not a budget issue.” While it’s refreshing to have a black director lead the nominations, it’s sad to note that Marcelle Mouton is the only female director competing within the category. Her Fabric Fresh spot is also nominated for a Mixed Media award. Marcelle is repped by Harry & Co, the new company that Delicious Films has opened to represent directors in the local market.
