Mandela's Children at Brighton Festival 2012

Kweku Mandela, Nelson's grandson will present his documentary film Mandela's Children at the Brighton Festival 2012 in England on May 6.

He is the film producer for this much anticipated new screen portrait of one of the great icons of the last century as seen through the eyes of his grandchildren. The documentary will have its worldwide theatrical release later this year. But for one night only the producers are offering Brighton Festival audiences a first chance to view and discuss selected highlights straight from the cutting room. A panel of speakers including two of Mandela’s grandchildren, the directors and producers, and Academy Award nominee Janet Suzman will discuss the film’s unique take on a well-documented subject, looking beyond Mandela as freedom-fighter and statesman to wider themes of family, inheritance and forgiveness.

Kweku was born in Transkei, South Africa and grew up in America only returning to his homeland in 1993 after his grandfather’s release from 27 years of political incarceration. Kweku attended APA International Film School in Sydney with long-time collaborator Stefan Vincent. They are currently working on a number of screenplays. Kweku is very active in the South African Film and Entertainment industries, directing and producing projects with his South African production company Mannequin Pictures and working on a variety of other locally produced films. Kweku is currently co-directing and producing a documentary feature about his grandfather entitled Mandela’s Children. Principal photography began in March 2009. His previous film, The Bang Bang Club was given a Gala Screening at the 2010 Toronto Film Festival.
