Netflix on a Roll with Afrocentric Content
Shortly after announcing their first ever South African series Queen Sono, Netflix announced the release of another local production, Shadow.
UPDATE: Season 1 of Shadow was released on Netflix on 8 March.
The story follows police detective Shadrach ‘Shadow’ Khumalo as he embarks on a quest to bring justice after a young girl is brutally murdered.
Shadow throws the underworld of Johannesburg into chaos as he attempts to fix what was broken.
What is particularly curious about Shadow, however, is his inability to feel physical pain after he was struck by lightning one night as a child.
The series stars Pallance Dladla as Shadow with Amanda du-Pont as Ashley, his love interest.
Other recent Netflix releases from the African continent include their first original African animated series, Mama K’s Team 4.
Created by Zambia’s very own, Malenga Mulendema, the series tells the story of four teen girls living in the neo-futuristic African city of Lusaka, Zambia who are recruited by a retired secret agent still committed to saving the world.
