Local screenwriter hits the big time in Hollywood

Local writer and director Mukunda Michael Dewil has joined the ranks of South African’s making good in “la la land” with the likes of Niel Bloomkamp, Sharlto Copley and Gavin Hood, with his latest film Vehicle 19 making it on to Hollywood’s 2010 Hit List for the years’ best original screenplay.

The prestigious list, compiled by some of the industry’s leading producers, agents and managers, has Mukunda in the company of such works as the Safe House with Denzil Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Natalie Portman’s B.Y.O and Warner Bros' Dark Moon.

“The script is a contained thriller set in South Africa that shows an innocent bystander getting wrapped up in a world of international espionage when he picks up the wrong car at a rental company,” comments Mukunda.

The movie is being produced by Ryan Haidarian and co-produced by Gary King of Picture Tree. Picture Tree also represents Mukunda for his commercial work.

This success follows on the heels of Mukunda’s debut feature film Retribution, staring two of South Africa’s powerhouse actors Joe Mafela and Jeremy Crutchley. Retribution has begun making waves in the international film festival circuit and is currently set for release in South Africa through the UIP and NFVF in August 2011.
