Without prior experience in environmental activism Jonathan Deal takes on the South African government and the powerful oil and gas industry in a bid to stop them from mining for shale gas in vast, pristine but semi-arid Karoo region. With little funding, stressed over wheather he would win the battle, doubt and the temptation to quit lingers on, but he solders on. For over two years, his organisation Treasure Karoo Action Group, manages keep fracking at bay. On April 15, 2013, Deal wins the acclaimed Goldman Environmental Prize in the US and prize money close to R1, 5 million which he injects into his campaign in order to shore up his fight which he hopes to win.
