Directed by Oliver Hermanus, who was 25 at the time, Shirley Adams is the story of a woman caring for her tetraplegic son on the Cape Flats. It won Best SA Film, Best First Film and Best Actress (Denise Newman) at the Durban International Film Festival, and also screened in competition at Locarno. The film has recently been awarded the Golden Unicorn Best Feature Film Prize at the 29th Amiens Film Festival in France. It has also received nine SAFTA nominations, including best feature film, best director and best actress.
