Wesgro continues to expand its footprint in the film industry to support and develop local Western Cape filmmakers. Here’s a look at some of the programmes and initiatives they are involved in.
Cannes Film Highlights
Monica Rorvik, Head of Wesgro Film and Media Promotion, was present at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival from 14 – 25 May 2019. The much-anticipated event on the global film calendar saw thousands flock to the French Riviera to network and find business opportunities, share their latest film slates, and take part in the festivities.
“I’m very proud to have taken part in the first edition of the Pavillion Afrique at Cannes market, which showcased the African continent to the global industry,” says Monica Rorvik.

Emerging Producers Legal Workshop
In collaboration with Irish MacLeod Inc and First National Bank, Wesgro Film and Media Promotion put together a legal workshop for emerging producers and SMMEs from 7 – 9 May 2019. This event was intended to fill the knowledge gap that exists in the local sector. The workshop covered the legal aspects from the start to the end of a film production, understanding the formulation of a company, preproduction, production, postproduction, sales and distribution.
“The workshop was well received by all participants. All those who attended had the opportunity to engage with two experienced entertainment lawyers, over two days,” says Lisa Mini, Film and Media Promotion Officer at Wesgro
“They walked away with a thorough understanding of the legal processes and got pressing questions answered for free! NFVF was in attendance and we look forward to future co-creation opportunities.”
Screencubator Business Programme at Encounters
The 21st edition of the Encounters South African International Documentary Festival will play host to several workshops on its programme during 6 – 16 June 2019. The event sees local, African and international documentaries showcased in several locations across Johannesburg and Cape Town.
In partnership with Wesgro Film and Media Promotion unit, FNB and UCT, the Cape Town leg of the festival will include the ScreenCubator Business Programme at InvestSA from the 7 – 8 June 2019.
“It’s not rocket science, but if you don’t know how, it’s a minefield,” says Tarha McKenzie, Festival Coordinator. “Encounters has an oh-so useful line-up of seminars, workshops, one-stops and one-on-ones with those acronyms you didn’t know were there to help you.”
Some of these include CIPC, SARS, and FNB, with info on everything from registering a company, and running a bank account efficiently to giving the tax man his due.
“Then there’s accessing funds and favours, so chats with Wesgro and City of Cape Town, the NFVF and a Documentary Filmmakers Association representative who’ll share how to do it right with the dti. And then we’ll prepare you for the sell sell sell – what you need to create an impression, from the poster to the press kit, and which festival will be your calling card to bigger and better things. And as if that isn’t enough, we have Master Classes with two of our international guests Emmanuelle Antille (A Bright Light: Karen and The Process) and Prof. Karin Jurschick (Playing God).”
Wesgro and the City of Cape Town will present at the festival and are proud sponsors of Encounters. Several other workshops will also take place in conjunction with the National Film and Video Foundation across both the InvestSA premises and Bertha Movie House in Isivivana, Khayelitsha.
